BAMS Weekend Conference
Friday 8th – Sunday 10th April 2011
The 2011 weekend conference will be held in Oxford and based at Worcester College. Founded in 1714, the college occupies a 26 acre site in the city centre with beautiful gardens, a lake and a wonderful mix of architectural styles.
The weekend will begin with a drinks reception in The Linbury Building set within the college gardens. Delegates will have a chance to view the medals that artists, collectors, dealers and others have brought with them. This will be followed by dinner in the magnificent setting of the college's 18th century dining hall where we will also dine-in on Saturday evening.
On Saturday morning we will take the short walk to the Ashmolean Museum where the theme of the talks will be emblems and medal reverses in the Renaissance. The speakers will be:
- Kristen Lippincott on 16th century emblems.
- Catherine Whistler on Titian's allegorical Triumph of Love, now in the Ashmolean.
- Jeremy Warren on Renaissance plaquettes.
- Rick Scorza on Vasari's Lepanto frescoes and the commemorative medals of Pius V.
The talks will be followed by a buffet lunch at the Ashmolean Museum followed by the society's AGM and a chance to find out more about the Museum's collections of coins and medals. Delegates can then enjoy some time at leisure to explore Oxford before returning to Worcester College for pre-dinner drinks.
Sunday morning activities will be held at Oxford University's Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, where sculptor Jane McAdam Freud will talk about her recent works inspired by medals. Jane will then lead a practical workshop entitled Something to Say, which will focus on the ideas underlying medals and their design.
A buffet lunch will be served back at Worcester College before delegates depart at 2pm.
All delegates are invited to bring medals for display (at their own risk). A lockable room will be available at the college from 4.30 pm on Friday until 2pm on Sunday with specific opening times advertised in the full programme. Those bringing medals might like to know that, if possible, we hope to be able to give each exhibitor a 5 minute slot to talk about their pieces during the course of the weekend. Should you wish to take advantage of this then do please let Janet know in advance. (jlarkin@thebritishmuseum.ac.uk or telephone 020 7323 8568)
A full programme will be sent to delegates in advance of the weekend.
We very much look forward to seeing you in the city of dreaming spires!
