BAMS Weekend Conference

Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th April 2010

This year's conference will be held in Cardiff and based at the Barcélo Angel Hotel, Castle Street, Cardiff, CF10 1SZ. Tel. +44 (0) 29 2064 9200 (www.barcelo-hotels.co.uk. Email angel@barcelo-hotels.co.uk). The Angel is a four star Victorian hotel in the city centre close to Cardiff Castle and the National Museum of Wales. Rooms include air-conditioning, wireless internet access and digital TV.

The weekend will begin with a drinks reception in The Prince of Wales Room at the hotel and a chance to view the medals that artists, collectors, dealers and others have brought with them. This will be followed by dinner in The Dragon Suite at the hotel.

Conference Speakers on Saturday morning will be –

  • Oliver Fairclough (Keeper of Art at National Museums of Wales)
  • Carolien Voigtmann (Curator of Medals, Geldmuseum, Utrecht)
  • Janos Kalmar (Sculptor and medallist, Hungary)

The talks will be followed by a buffet lunch at the hotel.

On Saturday afternoon, we will take the short walk to the National Museum of Wales in nearby Cathays Park to view the display of the 2010 BAMS Student Medals. Saturday evening should be one to remember as we enjoy a tour of the spectacularly ornate interior of Cardiff Castle, architect William Burges’s Victorian masterpiece, with curator Matthew Williams. This will be followed by a traditional Welsh Banquet in the castle’s historic Undercroft.

On Sunday morning we will make our way to the Norwegian Church Arts Centre, Harbour Drive, Cardiff Bay. This pretty church enjoys a stunning location on the re-developed waterfront, and it will provide an ideal location for artist Nigel Talbot to tell us about public art in Cardiff. After coffee, the workshop will be lead by Matthew Bonaccorsi, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint.

A buffet lunch will be served back at the hotel before delegates depart.

All delegates are invited to bring medals for display. A lockable room will be available at the hotel from 4.30 pm on Friday until 2pm on Sunday.

A full programme will be sent to delegates in advance of the weekend.

We very much look forward to seeing you in the Welsh capital!
