The artist writes: ‘I’m aware that with painting the viewer can see but not touch, so it’s compelling and satisfying that with the medal you are able to hold in your hand and actually touch a picture. I’ve dramatised that quality and also the two-sidedness by in each case covering one image with another. Given that only one side of the medal can be seen at a time, the combination of images present and absent gives rise to a very particular and elusive aesthetic.’
Applications are invited for the 'New Medallist' scheme, an initiative for artists based in Britain and Ireland who are relatively new to medal-making.
