description: Mamoo is Nicola Moss’s third medal for BAMS. Her George and the Dragon and The Man who planted Trees were issued in 1986 and 1991 respectively. About the medal, the artist writes: ‘I am amazed! It is twenty-one years since I made the medal George and the Dragon for BAMS. I first thought it would be interesting to make an archangel Michael medal as a comparative subject with St George, but, as the work progressed, it defied my intentions. A female subject appeared instead. This medal is about Source (Mother), who inspires much love, compassion and wisdom. I have chosen to name the medal Mamoo, but this is not her name. Unbeknown to me until recently, Ma-moo is a universal childish name for friend, but, for my sister and me, Mamoo was the name we fondly called our grandmother.’
Applications are invited for the 'New Medallist' scheme, an initiative for artists based in Britain and Ireland who are relatively new to medal-making.
