Conference 20102009-07-31 17:48:46
The annual weekend conference will be held in Cardiff from 23rd – 25th April 2010 and will be centred around the Barcélo Angel Hotel close to the historic splendour of Cardiff Castle.
Speakers will include Oliver Fairclough, Keeper of Art at The National Museums of Wales, talking about the early 20th century sculptor and medallist William Goscombe John, and Hungarian artist Janos Kalmar talking about contemporary Hungarian medals.
Delegates will be able to view entries from the BAMS Student Medal Competition, which will be on display at the National Museums of Wales at Cathays Park close to the Castle. No visit to Cardiff would be complete without a visit to the Castle and we will have a tour with curator Matthew Williams who will tell us of the Castle’s Roman and Norman origins, as well as showing us the lavishly decorated rooms created as a Victorian Gothic fantasy for one of the world’s richest men by architect William Burgess. That evening we will attend a Welsh Banquet in the Castle’s atmospheric undercroft.
The workshop activities will take place on the Sunday morning, and be led by Matthew Bonaccorsi, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint. We hope to be able to offer a trip to the Royal Mint as an optional excursion on the Friday afternoon.
Full details on the conference will be sent out to members later this year, along with conference fee information and booking forms. Meantime, pencil the dates in to your diary as it will be a weekend not to be missed!
