Stuart Frost works in Portugal. For a discussion of the artist and his works, which places Olhão, his BAMS medal, in context, see Ron Dutton’s article in this issue 47 of The Medal (p. 86). Of the title of the BAMS medal, the artist writes: ‘The direct translation from the Portuguese is “Eyes of water” (Olhos de agua), which refers to water-wells. The word comes from the Arabic “Al-hain”, from the time when this region of Portugal [the Algarve] was occupied by the Arabs. It describes a series of wells that stood proud above the incoming tide and appeared as eyes in the sea.’
