Nathan worked as an engraver/designer at the Royal Mint and later at the Franklin Mint before becoming freelance in 1973. His admiration of Turner is evident from his BAMS medal. The artist explained: ‘The obverse portrait is derived from the Varley drawing and the reverse contains a formal representation of elements characteristic of Turner’s work’.
