BAMS Struck Medal Award awarded to Ingrid Austlid Rise

26 Nov 2015 / Comments Off / in News/by Melanie

The 2015 BAMS Struck Medal Award was awarded to Ingrid Austlid Rise of Norway for her medal of Tormod Hermansen. The medal was struck by the Mint of Norway.  15 medals by 6 artists from 6 countries were submitted.  The winning medal was chosen by a panel of representatives from BAMS and medal manufacturer Thomas Fattorini. The award takes the form of a struck silver medal bearing a posthumous portrait of Thomas Peter Fattorini by Ian Rank-Broadley. The 2016 BAMS Struck Medal Award will be chosen from the struck medals submitted to the FIDEM exhibition to be held in Namur, Belgium.

Ingrid Austlid Rise says of the medal:

“The medal is a gift to Hermansen for his several years at the board of Mint of Norway, edited in a small number mainly for Hermansen and his family.

Hermansen is known as management and organizational reformer in the government, in 1991 he restructured the Telephone directorate for state enterprises, and eventually public company. He was CEO of Telecom 1991-1995 and further in the transitioned Telenor until 2002. Under Hermansen management , there was a total renovation of the Telecommunications Administration , in preparation for the liberalization of the telecommunications market that was already on the way in the UK. Hermansen was pushing for massive reorganization where a new organization did emerge on the side of the old , as well as conversion to a public corporation in 1994 .

The Elk, the king of the forest, is referring to his place of birth, a valley well known for its huge number of forest animals.”

RIBA Research Medal Design Competition

28 Jul 2015 / Comments Off / in News/by Melanie

The RIBA is holding a competition for the design of the new President’s Medal for Research to recognize 10 years of awards for research.

The competition is for the design of a new Research Medal to sit alongside the Institute’s other prestigious President’s Medals – Gold, Silver, and Bronze. These have been awarded since the nineteenth century, with the current design settled in the 1980s. The Institute has a proud history of holding and promoting open, honest and fair competition for architectural and civic design projects.

The competition will be an opportunity for designers and craftsmen to submit designs for a new medal – contemporary or traditional – that reflects the history and prestige of the President’s medals, the centrality of research to the RIBA’s mission and activities, and the relevance and impact of research on architectural practice more broadly.

The competition will be held in two stages. For the first, the RIBA is seeking Expressions of Interest from individuals and teams for the design of the new Medal. Competitors are asked to provide information regarding relevant experience and, where possible, examples of previous work in this field, as well as a brief statement outlining how they might approach the design for the obverse and reverse. We encourage as wide a range of proposals as possible. Entries will be anonymised before the judging panel invites up to six shortlisted candidates to provide full drawings and proposals for the medal. Honoraria of £250 will be awarded to the shortlisted competitors, and a prize of £2,000 awarded to the overall winner.

Full competition guidelines and a registration form for the open stage of the competition are available on the competition’s website and here in .pdf format. Enquiries should be sent to MedalComp@riba.org. The competition will be judged by an eminent panel including the present and immediate past president of the Institute; Philip Attwood, Keeper of Coins and Medals at the British Museum and President of the British Art Medal Society; and Charles Hind, RIBA Chief Curator and H J Heinz Curator of Drawings.
