Rosie White (b. 1985) is a student at Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery. Her medal, Everyone Needs a Volume Control, won the Worshipful Company of Founders’ grand first prize in the 2010 BAMS Student Medal Project. The artist writes: ‘I am deaf. I was born deaf. I have worn hearing aids since I was eleven months old. For twenty-four years I have sometimes felt isolated; sometimes been ignored; sometimes been misunderstood; and sometime been laughed at. I wanted to show that to hear, the brain needs to “tune” into sound, whether using a hearing aid, cochlear implant or the ear alone. The medal could be given for deaf awareness to either a healing-impaired or hearing person who promotes equality, demonstrating that being deaf means the brain needs a particular type of “tuning”, not replacing altogether!’
