Steyn is an established sculptor and medallist and teaches at the Art Colleges in The Hague and Amsterdam. His BAMS medal is a tribute to Gay van der Meer, curator of medals of the Royal Coin Collection in The Netherlands from 1960 until 1988. The process of reducing the profile to a limited number of layers was a gradual one, and Steyn sketched about 60 portraits in clay before he was satisfied. The reverse of the medal alludes to the lifelong fascination of the sitter with the eighteenth century medallists Martinus and Johan George Holtzhey: a prize medal by the latter was the inspiration for this side.
