Carys Greenwood (b. 1989) is a designer-maker studying three-dimensional design at Loughborough University School of The Arts. Through her work she aims to create beautiful and intriguing objects that people can enjoy. Working primarily on a small scale in glass and metals, she has recently started a collection of bespoke glass jewellery designed to demonstrate the vast potential of glass as a captivating and precious medium. For more, visit the artist’s blog at http://carysgreenwooddesigns.tumblr.com/. Her medal Infinite won the Bullseye Glass prize in the BAMS Student Medal Project 2011. The artist writes: ‘The medal was originally inspired by astronomy, the mystery that surrounds space and its “infinite” nature. I wanted the medal to be subtle and ambiguous, something tactile which the holder could interpret in any way they chose. The aim of my medal was to take something so infinite it cannot be measured, and shrink it down into one tiny piece that would fit into the palm of your hand; “holding the world in the palm of your hand”. The size and the weight of the medal were closely considered. I wanted the piece small enough to be comfortable to hold, explore, and evoke interest from its viewer, as well as having the solidity of bronze to suggest value and permanence. Infinite relates to my other work as it has a strong textural quality, which runs throughout my designs. A high level of quality, intricacy and detail is always paramount in my work.’
