Stanislaw Cukier was born in 1954 at Zakopane, Poland. He studied at the A. Kenar Secondary Art School in Zakopane, and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he graduated with honours in 1981, having specialised in medallic art under Professor Zofia Demkowska. Since then he has had several solo exhibitions in Poland, and has taken part in numerous group shows at home and abroad. He has contributed to FIDEM exhibitions since 1983. In 1986 he was awarded a prize for Wife’s Portrait and in 1989 the Grand Prix for Son’s Portrait at the Sculpture Triennial in Poland, and in 1992 he was awarded the Gold Medal at the Dante Biennial in Ravenna. His work can be found in museums in Wroclaw, Krakow and Warsaw. He lives and works in Zakopane, where he has been director of the A. Kenar Secondary Art school since 1994. Of his medal for BAMS, The Dreamer, the artist writes: ‘My children are my inspiration as I watch and observe them in various situations. They are a powerful motivation to sculpt a series, of which this medal is one.’
